A Timeline of Architecture & Design in History by Mohamed Elshahed
Tasmeem 2022: Radical Futures commissioned Mohamed ElShahed to create “A Timeline of Architecture & Design in History.”
This proposed timeline is presented in two formats when launched in the context of Tasmeem Doha 2022. The timeline visualizes a partial history of architecture and design focusing on Latin America and the Arab World enriched by the inclusion of a slew of geographically diverse political and cultural benchmarks from around the rest of the world. It is anchored in the idea that any view of history is always provisional. There is no finite reading nor any claim to a “complete history” here.
In his upcoming talk, Mohamed Elshahed, the curator of the project, will present the timeline and discuss the conceptual ideas that produced it.
- The physical timeline will be installed in VCUarts Qatar.
- The interactive timeline will go live on March 7th.
- A talk by Mohamed Elshahed will take place on March 10th at 3:15 pm.
Mohamed Elshahed is a curator, critic, and architectural historian focusing on modernism in Egypt and the Arab World. He is the author of Cairo Since 1900: An Architectural Guide (AUC Press, 2020), the first substantive survey of modern architecture in Egypt’s capital spanning 226 sites.
