New Potentials in Arabic Typography

Workshop → 9:00 am

Two-day in-person workshop by Sarah Shebl (Cairo-based independent designer & researcher)

7th March & 8th March 2022, 9 AM – 12 PM
Room 215
Upon Registration Only

Typography is the art of manipulating the visual form of language to enrich and control its meaning. It is an essential area of skill and knowledge for designers. Typography predates modern graphic design by around 500 years. It is rich in rules, conventions, and esoteric terminology; however, it remains an exciting space for invention and expression.

In this beginner-level workshop, we will study the characteristics of Arabic letterforms. We will consider the pragmatic concerns involved in selecting and combining Arabic, dive into Arabic script’s rich historical, cultural, and aesthetic histories and the contemporary Arabic type, and explore the type’s expressive, meaning-making potential.

Participants are required to bring their laptop or iPad for googling and digging for inspiration. Furthermore, they need to bring a sketchbook or white paper, pencils, pens, brushes, black sharpie, fine liners, tracing paper, paper clipper, and a grid sheet.

This event is an in-person event for the VCUarts Qatar community only. Please use the registration button to register.
